SPIRITS

So what’s a spirit?

I guess it could be a supernatural being.  But that’s not what we’re talking about here, a spirit is an alcoholic beverage produced by distilling (boiling a liquid and collecting its condensed vapors) fermented grain, fruit, or vegetables.   Typically, it has to be at least 35% alcohol by volume to qualify.  Yes, we could make vodka out of Yams! Cognac, brandy , Whiskey, Vodka, Rum, Tequila, etc are all generally termed as spirits.

So where does the taste come from?
In distillation, you separate chemicals out according to their boiling points. In the last stages of distillation, you get the chemicals that boil slower than ethanol (ethanol itself is tasteless). These are called the "tails," and they're where most of the flavor in liquor comes from.   Also, the subsequent mix is often aged in oak barrels and sometimes additional flavoring is added (such as juniper berries in gin).
“When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading”.  ~Henny Youngman

BEER
“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” ~Ben Franklin
Could this be true?   Let’s believe it anyway.  Beer is one of the world's oldest beverages, possibly dating back to the 6th millennium BC.  It’s also the world’s third most popular drink after water and tea.  Oktoberfest, in Munich every September, has its roots around the German beer-drinking culture and it’s estimated that nearly 6 million people attend each year!

Any idea when the first Nigerian brewery was opened?
Nigerian Breweries Plc. produced the first bottle of Star Lager in their Lagos-based brewery in 1949.
